Info on upcoming practices and TI race

Hello Everyone!

I hope that you've all had a nice weekend off and are ready to paddle next weekend. We have three practicesto go before our big race in San Francisco.

Practices dates at BIAC:
Sat., 09/01: 9:30 am
Sun, 09/09: 10:00 am
Sun, 09/16: 10:00 am

Our entry fee is being waived for the TI race. Therefore, it is important that all team members whowill be racing that day be members of CBDA (CaliforniaDragon Boat Association).I think I have sent reminders to all that still needto pay--but, if I missed anyone, please make sure you send a check for $25 made out to CDBA to me at:

The Treasure Island festival and race is sure to be a fun-filled weekend. I am so proud of our team--it's just great to be out on the water with all of you. Let's remember that we went from 2:41 sec in our first heat to 2:29 sec in our second. And, remember how the boat just flew through the water? And, how many people felt "the bump"?

I'd like to get a few more "hands on deck" in the race prep. Is anyone willing to take on coordinating these activities?
1. Food/beverages (may need more than one person tocoordinate)--I have paper products left over from PFL and will supplement
2. Carpooling
3. Set-up and take-down--remember, Fidelia drags all the equipment for the tents and tables--she needs HELP!!!! Both in and out.
4. Phone reminders/logistics--this is good to breakdown into about 3-4 people
5. Cheers/spirit--Let's see who can think up some new cheers! I've already thought that if we're next to "the boys'team" that yells, "Who Got Gas?" We can yell back,"Yeah, you got gas, but we got FLASH! Hot flash!!!!" Okay, another corny one. I know you guys can do better. Get your pompoms out and start thinking!

Another thing to remember: Treasure Island doesn'thave a Safeway right across the street--so ice andeverything has to be hauled in. Try to bring carts with large wheels, because the surfaces are not always paved at TI, and the road gets bumpy.

As usual, bring hats, sunglasses, sunscreen, and water. Don't forget a windbreaker and long pants in case the wind kicks up. A big towel might come in handy, as the chop can get rough, and we'll probably all get wet (c'mon people, it's a WATER SPORT).Does anyone have any camping or fold-up tables that they can bring?

More e-mails will be coming. I'm not sure what the waiver will look like, but I'll get it to everyone as soon as possible. It's really helpful if you get it back to me asap

Paddle for Life Race

The Paddle for Life Race took place last Saturday at Leo Ryan Park in Foster City and Paddle Past Cancer was there! Yeah!

We were lucky enough to not only have a full team but also a couple of alternates. Our first race was scheduled for 9:15 and took place shortly after. The water was smooth and silky, different from what we were used to in our practices at BIAC. The race went well and we finished with a time of 2:31 (I think).

After that, we were able to relax at the tent, watch the other racers and eat all of the wonderful food that people brought. What a buffet! We even invited the Foster City Fire Department team to come over for a meal. The day couldn't have been more beautiful.

We found out that we were racing in the Repercharge - why? I am not quite sure. I do know that at one point, I heard that there were 5 or 6 teams who had come in slower than Team Paddle Past Cancer. We geared up and headed to the prep area. Many of us switched out paddles for some that we thought might work better for us. We boarded and the race was on! At the end, we cut 12 seconds off of our first time, despite the wind having picked up and the water being choppier. The difference in the feel of the boat was amazing. In the first race, you could feel the rocking back and forth. In the second race, there was no rocking and the forward surge could definitely be felt.

After that race, we were done for the day but continued to enjoy the sunshine and good food. What a wonderful day!

Practice Update

Thanks for the post Susan! Lucky you - a private session with Jenn. Any of you that haven't gone to a workout at Equinox with Jenn, I encourage you to go. Susan says it best and I second her comments. It was a wonderful experience.

4/28 Gym Workout

Hello Paddlers!
I'm sorry I've missed the last three practices (two previous engagements, and one nasty flu bug). So, I was geared up to see folks at Equinox on Saturday, 4/28. I've got good news and bad news. The bad news is that I was the only one who showed up for Jenn's workout. The good news is that I was the only one that showed up for Jenn's workout session!
We started with cardio, worked on abs (oh, my! I'm paying for that today!), strength and balance training, and flirted around some of the machines.
I felt very lucky to have a private session with a personal trainer of Jenn's caliber. Just like in the boat, she's smart, funny, intuitive, supportive, and courageous.
I hope everyone is well, and look forward to seeing you this coming Saturday.

1st Gym Workout

Hello all paddlers!

Yesterday (Sunday, April 22), Jenn walked some of us through a workout program directed at building the right strengths for paddling. The six of us that were there really appreciated the time Jenn spent helping us to get it "right". Good posture, thigh bones back, no curled wrists, shoulder blades down the middle of the back, etc.

We went through a stretching and warming up routine in the wood-floored workout room then moved on to the "machines". First up was the rowing machine which we all successfully mastered after individual help from Jenn. Then is was on to all of the various weight machines for lats, biceps, triceps and quads. Free weights were also introduced. We wound up in another workout room with the "bolus" (a new one for me) , ergo balls and towels for some post-workout stretching and cooling down. Everyone enjoyed the foam roller. It felt so good we just wanted to lay there forever.

The workout session was followed by a group meal at the Chinese restaurant down the street. Yum!
